Although our international connections provide us with clear economic advantages, such as the 30,000+ Port and Eurotunnel related jobs locally, there are downsides too which require careful management.
The UK is a net importer of goods, and the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel provide the shortest crossing between the UK and mainland Europe. For the freight industry, this is a very reliable route, with about 100 port and tunnel roll-on/roll-off arrivals and departures each day. This provides the logistics industry with the high levels of capacity that are required to supply the UK with the goods that are required to meet the demands of the UK's consumers.
We have one very simple objective with this work - we aim to maximise the flow of freight through our area, and minimise the impact that this has on our local communities and businesses.
We would recommend that you watch our Freight In Kent video as it sums up the challenges that our area face. Our thanks go to Meridian News for supplying footage to assist us with the video production.
